Three August 2025, New Delhi — With the opening of a 500-kilowatt rooftop solar plant and the introduction of the digital NeVA (National e-Vidhan Application) platform, the Delhi Legislative Assembly has taken a significant step toward sustainable governance by becoming the first legislature in India to run entirely on solar power.
Solar Power Breakthrough
- The Assembly building will be entirely powered by a 500 kW rooftop solar installation, which will replace the previous 200 kW system.
- It is anticipated that the action will remove the yearly power expense of ₹2 crore, saving roughly ₹15 lakh per month (~₹1.75 crore annually).
- Any excess energy can be exported to the grid with net-metering, which would increase revenue and balance out fixed rates.
- The project was expedited; the foundation was set in May 2025, and commissioning was planned for 45 days later, well before the Monsoon Session.
NeVA’s Digital Transformation
- In keeping with the ‘One Nation, One Application’ vision under Digital India 2.0, the NeVA platform ushers in a fully paperless legislative procedure.
- The e-Vidhan system, which was put into use in under 100 days, has multilingual support, real-time document access, smart voting panels, and an improved IT environment.
