Odisha’s Solar Capacity Surpasses 706 MW

How to Harness Odisha’s Solar Power Potential

INDIA

In Short : According to the Odisha Renewable Energy Development Agency, the state’s solar energy capacity has increased to 706.34 MW as of June 30, 2025. There are already 486.66 MW more solar projects in the works, but delays in environmental and land clearances are slowing down progress.

Development Despite Obstacles

Odisha’s increasing use of renewable energy is reflected in the growth in solar installations. However, a pipeline of about 500 MW of future projects is still delayed due to obstacles including site acquisition, vegetation removal, and tree-felling approvals that put a burden on development schedules.

Support for Complementary Policies Increasing the Momentum

Simultaneously, Odisha has approved 16,441 solar pumps by July 31 and 5,713 installations have been finished, enhancing access to energy in rural and agricultural areas. The state is actively involved in national programs like as PM-KUSUM, which empowers farmers through solar irrigation, and PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, which aims to construct rooftop solar systems in 10 million households by 2026–2027.

Impact and Significance of Clean Energy

In addition to increasing Odisha’s output of clean energy, this solar development advances the state’s transition to a more decentralized, sustainable electricity infrastructure. However, the constraints of growth without concurrent infrastructure transformation are revealed by administrative bottlenecks in project approvals. To fully realize the state’s solar potential and guide it toward a robust, renewable future, these procedural obstacles must be resolved.
