Coimbatore, one of South India’s most industrially active cities, is making rapid stridesNtoward achieving its 2050 carbon neutrality goal by embracing a wide range of green energy and climate-friendly initiatives.
Under the leadership of the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) and with
support from global agencies, the city has adopted a proactive roadmap to reduce greenhouse
gas emissions and promote clean mobility, energy efficiency, and sustainable urban
development.
Key Green Initiatives:
- Transition to electric buses and e-autos to decarbonize public transportation
- Expansion of solar rooftop installations across public buildings
- Adoption of energy-efficient street lighting and water pumping systems
- Launch of waste-to-energy projects to reduce landfill dependency
- Introduction of green building policies and incentives
These efforts are being supported by international organizations including the C40 Cities
Climate Leadership Group, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and several private
sector partners, positioning Coimbatore as a model for mid-sized urban centers aiming for
sustainable transformation.
Officials say the city’s current efforts are expected to reduce carbon emissions by over 1
million tonnes by 2030, with further momentum driven by smart city infrastructure, climate
resilience planning, and community engagement.
A CCMC spokesperson noted, “Coimbatore is committed to becoming a climate-resilient
city. Our focus is on long-term solutions that blend sustainability with inclusive urban
growth.”
