This program is part of Chandigarh’s broader vision to become a solar-powered smart city, aligning with India’s renewable energy goals and its commitment to reduce carbon emissions.
Key Features of the Initiative:
- Residents, RWAs, and institutions can lease their rooftops to solar developers
- Solar power systems will be installed at no upfront cost to the rooftop owner
- Revenue-sharing model to benefit both the solar developer and the property owner
- MCC to play a facilitator role by aggregating rooftops and ensuring transparent agreements
The ‘Rent-a-Roof’ model aims to significantly boost rooftop solar adoption, especially among those who want to contribute to clean energy but lack the capital or technical expertise to set up solar systems independently.
A senior MCC official stated, “This initiative democratizes access to solar energy while
optimizing urban rooftop spaces. It’s a win-win for citizens and the environment.”
The Chandigarh administration is working closely with private solar companies and DISCOMs to streamline approvals, ensure high-quality installations, and guarantee long-
term maintenance.
Chandigarh’s Renewable Vision
With limited land availability, Chandigarh has consistently promoted rooftop solar as a viable solution. The city has already achieved over 50 MW of rooftop solar capacity, with a goal to reach 100 MW in the coming years through community-led and innovative models like ‘Rent-a-Roof’.
