How to Navigate Category IV Power Trading Licences

POLICY & REGULATIONS

In Short : In accordance with Section 14 of the Electricity Act of 2003, Mahagenco Renewable Energy Limited (MREL) has petitioned the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) for a Category IV interstate electricity trading license.

Regulatory Process Fueling

In accordance with CERC’s earlier instructions, MREL provided a compliance affidavit dated July 3 during the hearing on July 31, 2025. CERC has reserved its final judgment and acknowledged that all requirements have been met; the license will not be granted until a formal order has been issued.

Maintaining the Framework for Licensing

The CERC’s 2020 Trading Licence Regulations’ set regulatory timelines are adhered to in this petition. Prior to awarding interstate trade authority, CERC assesses procedural eligibility and then holds off on making decisions to guarantee compliance with all legal requirements.

Impact and Significance of Clean Energy

In order to promote grid flexibility and increase access to clean energy, MREL will be able to trade renewable power across states if the license is granted. In addition to expanding MREL’s operational scope, this supports India’s larger plan to open up regional electricity markets and hasten the adoption of renewable energy sources.
