In Short : Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation (KPTCL) has awarded a significant auction to Prostarm Info Systems for the installation of a 150 MW/300 MWh standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the Doni substation in Gadag. For 12 years, the project will follow a build-own-operate paradigm, supported by viability gap funding to increase grid resilience and financial sustainability.
Project Impacts and Financial Structure
With an all-capacity bid at a set tariff of ₹2.54 lakh per MW per month, the business won. A balanced and feasible operational framework will be made possible by additional viability gap funding, which will cover either ₹27 lakh per MW or 30% of the capital cost, whichever is lower. This illustrates how utility-scale energy storage is becoming more and more significant in India’s electricity system.
Increasing the Uptake of Energy Storage
The BESS market in India is expanding rapidly, rising from 51 MWh in 2023 to over 341 MWh in 2024. With 36% of the installed capacity, Karnataka is driving this increase, followed by Gujarat and Chhattisgarh. This pattern highlights how important storage devices are to integrating renewable energy sources and guaranteeing a steady supply.
