GREEN AMMONIA

SECI Sets New Benchmark with ₹55.75/KG Green Ammonia Price

FEATURED

In Short : The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), in accordance with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, held its first-ever auction for Green Ammonia and achieved a record-low procurement price of ₹55.75 per kg (~USD 641/tonne), which is a significant decrease from the ₹100.28/kg (~USD 1,153/tonne) observed in international H2Global auctions in 2024.

The purchase is for 75,000 metric tonnes of green ammonia each year that will be sent to Paradeep Phosphates Ltd. in Odisha. It is the first of 13 planned auctions that will raise a total of 724,000 tonnes per year.

Clean Energy Transition & Decarbonization Win

The ten-year fixed price provides a compelling economic case for implementing green energy sources, such as green ammonia, which are essential for India’s transition from the manufacturing of high-emission fertilizers to net-zero emissions.
This milestone strengthens India’s position in the energy transition, boosting investor confidence in its renewable energy and Green Hydrogen frameworks.
This Green Ammonia rate is significantly more attractive for fuel decarbonization goals than grey ammonia, which cost approximately USD 515/tonne in March 2025.

Mechanism of Auction and Policy Background
With assistance from the Department of Fertilizers, SECI held the auction under the SIGHT Scheme (Mode 2A), which is supervised by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE).
The goal of the mandated payment security and competitive bidding processes is to increase trust throughout the Green Hydrogen ecosystem and facilitate the widespread use of Green Ammonia and its derivatives

Wider Market Consequences
This price discovery acknowledges Green Ammonia’s contribution to lowering dependency on fossil fuels for fertilizer, electricity, and hydrogen storage, and it is part of India’s sustainable energy diversification strategy.
This also signifies a critical stage in India’s energy efficiency revolution—transitioning toward sustainable inputs and cleaner industrial feedstocks

The bottom line
India’s growing support for clean energy, decarbonization, and climate action plans is demonstrated by the historic low rate achieved in SECI’s first Green Ammonia auction.
This historic purchase strengthens Green Ammonia’s position in India’s drive for clean-tech value chains and sustainable fertilizer production.
