Sonowal’s Vision: Pioneering Green Hydrogen at VOC Port

BUSINESS & FINANCE

In Short : A green hydrogen pilot project was launched at V.O. Chidambaranar (VOC) Port in Tuticorin by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. As part of a renewable energy transition, this is India’s first port-based hydrogen project, intended to power EV charging stations and streetlights in the port colony.

Encouraging Innovation and Strategic Growth

The pilot project is a component of VOC Port’s larger decarbonization plan, which also includes rooftop solar growth, green methanol bunkering, and a projected 6 MW wind power facility. When taken as a whole, these programs establish VOC Port as a leader in innovative sustainable marine practices.

Impact and Significance of Clean Energy

Adoption of green hydrogen at ports may greatly reduce emissions from port operations, encourage the integration of renewable energy sources, and set an example for the marine industry in India. This program supports India’s transition to net-zero and is in line with international clean shipping standards.
