In Short : JP Chalasani, CEO of Suzlon Energy, has allayed worries that solar energy combined with battery energy storage systems (BESS) would displace wind power in India’s energy balance. Since grid stability and cost considerations continue to favor wind-based solutions over solar-storage combinations, wind is still essential.
The two deciding factors are cost and grid reliability.
Chalasani stressed that wind tariffs, which usually range from ₹3.6 to ₹3.9 per unit, “ride the evening peak” and provide good value. Even with BESS, solar presently costs between ₹2.5 and 2.6 on average. However, battery prices would need to drop to $1.20 per kWh, which is now unachievable, in order for solar-plus-storage to outcompete wind.
Record Execution and Rival Markets
Suzlon is currently concentrating on the Middle East, Europe, and neighboring regions as it diversifies beyond India as a result of policy uncertainties in traditional export destinations like the U.S. With an order book of 5.7 GW, the business also recorded its best-ever quarterly performance in Q1 FY26, delivering 444 MW of wind turbines.
