In Short : The first green hydrogen pilot project at any Indian port was launched by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal at V.O. Chidambaranar (VOC) Port in Tuticorin. Streetlights and an EV charging station in the Port Colony will be powered by the ₹3.87 crore installation, which produces 10 Nm³/hr of green hydrogen.
Encouraging Innovation and Strategic Growth
This pilot is a component of a larger green energy initiative at VOC Port that also includes a planned 6 MW wind farm, a 400 kW rooftop solar installation (raising the port’s total solar capacity to 1.04 MW, the highest among Indian ports), and a ₹35.34 crore green methanol bunkering facility—all of which are in line with the port’s net-zero goals.
Impact and Significance of Clean Energy
The program highlights India’s transition to renewable energies and energy independence in the maritime industry. VOC Port is lowering its carbon footprint, improving energy resilience, and establishing a standard for sustainable port operations nationwide by producing and using clean hydrogen locally.
