What is Japan’s First Utility-Scale Energy Storage Facility?

ENERGY STORAGE

In Short : At the Senri Supply Center in Osaka, ITOCHU Corporation, in partnership with Osaka Gas and Tokyo Century, has started commercial operations at Senri Chikudensho, a utility-scale lithium-ion battery energy storage system rated at 11 MW / 23 MWh. This represents a major advancement in grid resilience and renewable infrastructure in Japan.

Storage Strengthens Grid Stability During the Growth of Renewables

By storing excess energy for later use, the facility, which is supported by public subsidies to encourage distributed energy resources, helps grid operators to mitigate the effects of variations from renewable sources. Senri Chikudensho plays a key role in maintaining supply and demand dynamics in a continuously changing electricity landscape by engaging in wholesale, balancing, and capacity markets.

Operational integration is supported by collaborative expertise.

Osaka Gas runs the facility and controls energy trading, Tokyo Century is in charge of commercial viability and operational support, and ITOCHU provided the energy storage technology and maintains the power conversion system in this joint venture. This collaboration streamlines the implementation of vital energy storage solutions by fusing technology, energy market knowledge, and management effectiveness.
